Abstract
We present a methodology for estimating the sensitivity of a background surveillance system for livestock disease. An epidemiological model was developed that simulates the spread of disease in a livestock population in parallel with background surveillance comprising serological and bulk tank milk testing. The model allows animal health personnel to assess candidate background surveillance strategies with respect to sensitivity and cost effectiveness.
